  • The information below was taken from Grassfed Beef by author Jo Johnson

Consumers have been led to believe that meat is meat. In other words, no matter what an animal is fed, the nutritional value remains the same. This is however not true. The diet and how an animal is treated can have a profound influence on the nutrient content of the meat. The difference between grain/concentrate fed animals and purely grass fed animals is dramatic.

Grass fed meat is significantly lower in the bad fat, possibly as much as half as much as a comparable non grass fed animal. Grass fed beef actually has the same fat content as skinless chicken.

Grass fed meat is also lower in calories, a steak for instance has almost 100 fewer calories than that from a comparable non grass fed animal.fat cattle grazing in our fields

Grass fed meat is higher in the good fat omega-3 as much as six times more. This is because omega-3s are formed in the green leaves (chloroplasts) of plants.  60% of the fat content of grass is a type of omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic or LNA and as soon as an animal is taken off grass and fattened on concentrates they will lose their valuable store of LNA as well as two other types of omega-3 fatty acid thus reducing the good fat element.

So.... if you eat beef once a week, simply swapping to grass fed beef will save you approximately 5,200 calories a year and could make you overall much healthier! It also tastes better!
